Lithium Ion Batteries

The home battery that efficiently stores energy to power your home for longer

Safe, reliable energy storage

Why Lithium Ion?

Lithium Ion batteries are popular in large scale applications for several reasons:

Extreme Efficiency

The reactions are more efficient.

Higher Energy Density

Lithium Ion is up to 4 x denser.

Long Lasting

Lithium Ion outlasts other types.

How the technology works

Lithium Ion batteries falls into the same broad category as normal car batteries – namely rechargeable electrochemical batteries. Electrochemical batteries allow two chemicals to react, which generates electricity as the battery discharges. When the battery is charging, the reaction goes in reverse and the reverse reaction absorbs energy. The most common batteries historically consisted of lead and sulphuric acid, whereas modern lithium ion batteries use Lithium and various combinations of components like Cobalt, Nickel, Manganese, Iron, Aluminium etc.

Our unique solution

For residential (stationary) energy storage applications, Energy Partners chose the safest and most stable lithium ion battery chemistry available, which is Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4 or LFP). LFP does not have a risk of thermal runaway associated with the more reactive lithium ion chemistries.

Our batteries, available in two sizes, are packaged in a special moulded enclosure to match the aesthetics of your home. They also feature an LED light to show charge and indicate when the battery is in use. The batteries are designed to integrate to our Icon Home Energy Hub™ inverter and our mobile monitoring app.

Cycled daily, the battery will last 10 years and allow you to consume some of the excess solar power generated during the day, at night. It will also provide you with back-up energy to power your essential loads in case of a grid power outage.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much battery back-up do I need?

Every home’s backup energy needs are different. Our approach is to help you minimise your investment and install the most economical energy solution. We recommend selecting a battery large enough to only power your essential loads, such as lights, television, internet, security system and low energy kitchen appliances during a power outage. A 3.6kWh battery is typically sufficient to power the critical loads of a medium sized home for 3 hours.

Why do I need to buy an inverter, if I only have the need for battery back-up?

The electrical energy produced by the battery is in the form of direct current (DC) electricity and is not the same as the Eskom generated alternating current (AC) electricity consumed by your loads. Inverters convert DC electricity from the battery into AC electricity that is in a suitable form to be utilised by your loads.

Are Lithium Ion batteries not much more expensive than Lead Acid batteries?

The initial upfront price of Lithium Ion batteries seem to be more expensive, but in the long-term the higher energy efficiency, higher energy density and longer life puts our LFP batteries at or below the cost of good quality deep cycle lead acid batteries.

Are lithium ion batteries safe?

The LFP chemistry that we have chosen for our batteries have been put under extreme test conditions and do not cause thermal events. They are completely safe and can safely operate in temperatures ranging between -45°C and 65°C
